It’s 6:15 and it’s the half price sale at work today. I’m really not looking forward to it. Customers get violent, people smear human waste on the walls of the restrooms, at least one person vomits and people relieve themselves in the drinking fountain (never drink from the drinking fountain!).
I’m anticipating all this and more as I try to eat my bagel. I still need to shower and shave so I think I’m going to give up on breakfast. Also I have to leave early to take a bus so M. can keep the car. I live about a little over a mile away from where I have to catch the Walmart bus to goodwill.
I’m now on the bus and happy to say it was on time. I always try to get an earlier bus if I can otherwise I probably won’t get to work when I need to. They tend to run very early or very late on this route. Maybe that’s a good omen for the day.
I’m now at work and it’s too early to clock in so I have a few minutes to wait. As usual two people have called in already so it will be a little rough today probably. The first thing I have to do is an inventory of all our product and supplies so I can order the trucks for this week. It’s not really part of my job but my manager is training me for a team lead position and we really need the money. Plus I just like to learn new things. It’s not really a hard task I just have to estimate how much product we will use next week and weigh it against how much product will likely be donated today. The half price sale is a huge day for donations, people often bring their old stuff in before they get new.
It’s lunch time and It’s taking a while to eat because I have a broken tooth. I can’t get in to the dentist for a couple of weeks so I’m trying to be careful. We have been busy today which is good news. It’s hard with a short staff but it means the store is making money. This is the end of the slow season, but through the winter half price day dictates how much money is available for payroll and if hours will be cut ad a result. So busy is good. A customer collapsed earlier and an ambulance had to be called. That happens a lot on sale day.
I’m home now. I made it through another sale. I’m really glad I don’t have to do that again for another month. I’m going to cook dinner before we go on a walk and then BED!
